Bali: Crafts

Bali Arts & Crafts, Wood Carving, Batik, Canvas

Artistic Bali is a melting pot of cultures and traditions. The Balinese have an inborn talent of absorbing different cultural elements, blending them with their own, to produce dynamic new artistic hybrids. Across the years, Bali has soaked up Chinese, Buddhist, Indian, Hindu, Javanese and Western influences.

The Balinese were, traditionally, animists. Even when Hinduism arrived in Bali, its practices were adapted to go hand in hand with local traditions, thus making Hinduism in Bali very much different from its original form in India. Even the Hindu Mahabarata and Ramayana epics take on Balinese nuances and beliefs when played out in the wayang.

Other aspects of Balinese life follow suit. Take for instance, its performing arts. Bali’s dance, music and Wayang theatres still retain rich religious connotations, after having been enriched by contemporary artistry, and are still performed to appease and please the gods. This is illustrated in the trance dance of the Barong, or the intense Kecak dance; which retains very Balinese elements but includes a rhythm set by Western influences.

Random Reasons Why We Love Nosara, Costa Rica

There is a reason why we choose to host our 200-hour teacher training in Nosara, Costa Rica year in and year out. And if one reason isn’t enough, we came up with 15!

  1. Monkeys are your alarm clock (sometimes they want you up and about at 4am!)
  2. Nosara is a Blue Zone meaning it is one of the healthiest places to live in the world
  3. Pristine beaches + super good swell for surfing
  4. Abundance of local fresh produce + the best avocados and pineapple I have ever devoured. Not to mention the coffee, ohhhhh the coffee!!
  5. Pollution almost doesn’t exist

My First Instawalk in Florence

“Yesterday morning as I was having breakfast and scrolling through Instagram I found out that an Instawalk was about to take place in Florence.

Since I had no plans and my daughter was going to be out for the day I decided to be a little spontaneous, grabbed my phone, jumped on my bike and reached the crowd of Instagramers in Piazza del Duomo.

For two hours we walked around Florence and although I had seen the places hundreds of times before it felt amazing to get out and shoot again. I so needed this in order to get back on track with my personal photography which I have honestly been neglecting a bit lately.”

Alchemy of Love Sunrise to Sunset in Baja

You come to us from another world;
From beyond the stars and a void of space
Transcendent, pure – of unimaginable beauty.
Bringing with You the essence of Love.
You transform all who are touched by You –
Mundane concerns, troubles and sorrows dissolve in Your presence
Bringing joy to ruler & ruled, to peasants and kings.
You bewilder us with Your grace;
All evil is transformed into goodness.
You are the Master Alchemist!
You light the fire of Love in earth & sky,
In heart & soul of every being.
Through Your loving, existence & non-existence merge –
All opposites unite –
All that is profane becomes sacred again.

~Rumi
