The Moment You're Born, You Start Dying

I remember the first time I heard this in a Yoga class: “The moment you’re born, you start dying.”

It totally caught my attention, made me listen more closely and quite frankly scared me a little too. To be honest, I didn’t come to yoga to learn about dying. I was just trying to feel better living. Well, Dan Buettner wrote this book “Blue Zone’s” (see below from wikipedia for an easy summary) where he defines the 9 things in common that people in the 5 Blue Zones share with one another. Going on a yoga retreat, like ours to Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula August 11-18, 2012, truly encompasses almost all of these 9 things to do to live longer.

*When on retreat we form a tribe of like-minded individuals coming together for the purpose of expanding into their individual greatness.

According to Wikipedia a Blue Zone is defined as:
“Blue Zone is concept used to identify a demographic and/or geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives, as described in Dan Buettner’s book, “The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from people who lived the longest.” The concept grew out of demographic work done by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain[1], who identified Sardinia’s Nuoro province as the region with the highest concentration of male centenarians. As the two men zeroed in on the cluster of villages with the highest longevity, they drew concentric blue circles on the map and began referring to the area inside the circle as the Blue Zone. Buettner identifies longevity hotspots in Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and among the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California, and offers an explanation, based on empirical data and first hand observations, as to why these populations live healthier and longer lives.”

Five Blue Zones have been identified by Dan Buettner:

  • Sardinia, Italy.
  • The islands of Okinawa, Japan.
  • Loma Linda, California.
  • Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.
  • Icaria, Greece.

    A Favorite Testimonial:
The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is verily a place of refuge, a haven of rest, a secure port in a stormy world, an oasis of fecundity. I have been fortunate to have visited the property on numerous occasions during the past seven years of her gestation, watching the process of her conception, development, and birth, and have personally witnessed the dedication that Perrey and Jeff have shown in their determination to develop The Sanctuary into a retreat that is worthy of the name. They, as sincere stewards of this Jewel of the Jungle, offer a warm welcome to any sincere seeker who wishes to enjoy The Sanctuary’s unique charms; and I, as a repeatedly satisfied guest, can recommend this Pearl of the Nicoya Peninsula to anyone who has a heartfelt wish to experience the true bounty of the earth, to experience life as Nature intended us to live it. ”

Five Blue Zones have been identified by Dan Buettner:

  • Sardinia, Italy: One team of demographers found a hot spot of longevity in mountain villages where men reach the age of 100 years at an amazing rate.
  • The islands of Okinawa, Japan: Another team examined a group that is among the longest lived on Earth.
  • Loma Linda, California: Researchers studied a group of Seventh-day Adventists who rank among America’s longevity all-stars.
  • Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: The Nicoya Peninsula was the subject of research on a Quest Network expedition which began on January 29, 2007.
  • Icaria, Greece: The April ’09 expedition to the island of Ikaria uncovered the location with the highest percentage of 90 year-olds on the planet – nearly 1 out of 3 people make it to their 90s. Furthermore, Ikarians “have about 20 percent lower rates of cancer, 50 percent lower rates of heart disease and almost no dementia”.
  • *Residents of the first three places produce a high rate of centenarians, suffer a fraction of the diseases that commonly kill people in other parts of the developed world, and enjoy more healthy years of life.
