Staying Curious

I love traveling because of the feeling of wonder you cultivate, experiencing places in the world with so much history. I owe my parents a huge debt of gratitude for inspiring a love of travel and curiosity in both me and my brother. And interestingly the pace of curiosity is much like yoga, it’s mindful.

Curiosity doesn’t race around missing everything big and small. To be curious means we are fully present to the subtle energies as well as the impressive works of art in nature or by man. It hones the art of “being”.

During yoga class we get to try out the art of being. We sit in wonder of it all in the moment and practice breathing and feeling. There is a quiet curiosity that arises from our time on the mat that is then transportable out into the world. We feel part of the mystery it means to be alive, curious to our own humanity.

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and science. Whosoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes dimmed.” Albert Einstein

So today practice being even a little bit more curious. Live in wonder of your own life! And don’t forget when you love your life and remain curious, your life will love you back! Silvia

Holding Ourselves Accountable for our Happiness

“Happiness depends on ourselves.” – Aristotle.

One of the things I love most about traveling, is that if you want to be happy while going around the world you must learn how to be ACCOUNTABLE. “Happy people avoid blame in all its incarnations. They don’t blame other people, they don’t blame circumstances, and they don’t blame themselves. To happy people blame serves no purpose. It doesn’t ever get us what we truly desire. In fact happy people not only avoid blame but they also avoid its family members envy, greed and jealousy – which are among the key indicators of unhappiness. These reactions lead no place. The choice to be accountable is the choice to be masters of our own fate.” (The Choices Happy People Make)

When traveling in a new city or new country for that matter, many circumstances are out of your control and things may not unfold the way you expected them to. What is in your control is to be accountable for how you respond. You can get angry, righteous and prove your point right but none of this will make you happy. “No matter what life presents to us we have the ability to move forward, to do something good for ourselves, to make a difference, to have an effect.” Throwing an emotional blameful tantrum will keep you stuck, choosing to flow forward to promote your greater happiness inside the situation that presents itself.

You see I used to use blame as an emotional crutch. I used to say things like ‘I can’t travel because of my job, because my partner doesn’t want to, because I can’t leave teaching my students need me, because I don’t have enough money.’ The list would go on and on. The time on the yoga mat is where in a small increment – an hour we practice through poses saying to ourselves, I MAKE MY LIFE AND NO ONE ELSE MAKES IT FOR ME. It serves us as a reminder that “There is so much more joy in taking personal accountability than in being a victim. I actively participate in my life. The buck stops with me! I trust I am capable enough to handle anything that comes my way.” (The Choices Happy People Make)

So today ask yourself, what do you want your happy life to look like?

What intention do you have to be accountable for your life?

INTENTION: “Intention is an inner-driven desire to play in the ball game of happiness, accountability is its natural outcome – the urge to step up to the plate and hit the ball. Accountability is HOW intention comes to LIFE. Intention is cause and accountability is effect.” (Choices Happy People Make)

How can you hold yourself more accountable for your happiness? Even inside situations that are difficult can you see what part you have and explore what you can learn from the experience instead of blaming anyone or anything?

This week can you stop blaming your job, your life, other people for not “allowing you to travel” and experience the world? Instead learn to respond to what you’re feeing with authenticity. And remember keep saying to yourself, I make my life and no one else makes it for me!” If you want to go on a yoga retreat, YOU CAN. You have your own permission.

Love yourself, love your day, love your life! Silvia

Eating Well While Traveling

When going on retreat you know upon arriving you’ll be spoiled with organic, delicious cuisine. However, in transit before arriving to your destination it may take a bit more pre-planning to eat well. Here are some of our best tips to help you.

1. Bring your water bottle (dont’ forget to empty it before security).
2. Prior to taking off, while in the air and upon landing drink lots and lots of water.
3. Eat something at home before you begin your travel day. Start with a good foundation.
4. Bring portable, easy to carry healthy snacks. Things you know you’ll eat and enjoy otherwise you’ll ignore them.

5. Stay with your routine of coffee, tea. Travel days are not the time to go caffeine free all of a sudden.
6. Eat something en route that is simple and easily digestible. Pay more at the airport if you have to. It’s worth it instead of paying less for something less healthy.
7. Don’t starve yourself. Otherwise upon landing you’re going to make less wise eating choices or you’ll over eat unnecessarily.

Are You Tired? Get your Energy Back

We all have some old outfit, pair of jeans, old shoes, t-shirt that we just can’t seem to part with but know it’s time to retire them. The same goes with our energy. At times, our internal energy needs a thorough cleaning. And an especially great time to do this is as we approach Spring, less than a month away March 21, 2012. So this year instead of carrying around old, tattered energy into a new season why not give yourself an Energy Makeover and make it the best year ever?

Key ways yoga helps get our energy back include:

*Improving our emotional well-being.

*Reducing anxiety.

*Restoring our ability to sleep soundly.

*Refreshing our spirt.

*Triggering the relaxation response, the antidote to the stress response.

A great pose to practice for a mini “Energy Makeover” is Savasana. It restores your energy more than sleep!

During the deep relaxation pose of savasana (corpse pose), one systematically relaxes every part of the body, even suggesting that the brain itself is “relaxed.” During conscious relaxation, thoughts are experienced more as an energy, which is associated with the brain than as the sum total of who we are. We have thoughts, but those thoughts no longer take over our bodies and minds at large — triggering tension, anxiety or other responses. Yoga teaches us that consciousness and thoughts are not the same thing. When we are relaxed we are able to let the thoughts flow through us without dancing away with them to the past or the future. We remain conscious, allowing the thoughts to come through us, but we learn not to interact with them. We can say to ourselves, “Oh, there’s another thought of dinner, or of person ‘X’ or of fear about tomorrow’s meeting.” Then we can let go of that thought and return to the relaxation at hand. When we see where and how we are leaking energy in fighting our thoughts then we can stop the leaks and Makeover our Energy. Lover yourself, love your day, love your life! Silvia

PS If you’re looking for a way to really refresh and recharge consider joining us on a Yoga Retreat, Wellness Adventure. Book yourself a trip in 2012 to Sonoma, Tuscany, Hawaii, Mexico, San Juan Islands, Bali!

Relaxation Exercise to Reduce Tension

This is an easy way to reduce tension in your life. Try this Tense and Release Relaxation. This practice is very simple to do and will probably take no more than 2-4 minutes (longer if you have time). The basic exercise is to tense muscle groups, and then release the tension. You may find it comfortable to go through the sequence only one time, or to go through it several times.

Do both the tensing and the releasing with full awareness. There is no need to tense at 100% of your capacity–about 50% of your capacity to tense will be sufficient.

It is best to maintain breath awareness as you do this as you begin to feel that breath is a manifestation of energy, and how that energy flows throughout you.

  • First, tense all of the muscles of the face, including forehead, cheeks, mouth, and upper neck. Then release with full awareness. You will notice the relaxation.
  • Gently roll the head from side to side, with awareness of the tightening muscles, and the feeling of release.
  • Tighten the shoulders, pulling them upwards and forwards. Then release.
  • Tense the entire right arm, from the shoulder down through the fingers. Do this without making a fist or lifting your arm off of the floor. Allow your attention to be deep inside the arm, not just on the surface. Then release slowly, with awareness.
  • Tense the left arm in the same way, and observe the release.
  • Gently tense the muscles of the chest and the abdomen, while continuing to breathe without holding the breath. Then release.
  • Tense and release the right hips and the buttocks.
  • Tense and release the right leg, down through the feet and toes in the same way that the right arm was tensed and released.
  • Tense and release the left hips and buttocks.
  • Tense and release the left leg.
  • While no longer tensing any muscles, allow your attention to drift back up through the legs, through the abdomen and chest, through the arms, and back to the face.
  • After completing the Tense and Release practice enjoy savasana as break from a hectic day or use it to prepare for further meditation. Think of this as a “mini-retreat”. Love yourself, love your day, love your life!
